Sokoto Chief Judge Grants Pardon to 43 Inmates Awaiting Trials

Sokoto Central Prison was filled with unprecedented joy on Thursday as inmates couldn't hold as the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Bello Abbas granted pardon to 43 awaiting trial.

This came when Mr Abbas paid an official visit to the inmates and in a bid to gain insight on cases with more Chances of hearing.

 The Chief Judge stated that the move would lead to depopopulation of the prisons as suspects awaiting trial won't have to stay more than the supposed time frame while awaiting trial.

“Our aim is to see to the welfare of the inmates and ensure that no one will stay longer than necessary, while awaiting trial before the various courts in the state.

“As such, the assignment we are embarking on is to ensure speedy clearance of all awaiting trials, while those who had over stayed are discharged,”

He assured the awaiting trial inmates left that justice would be served soon after a briefing with the courts and other bodies involved.

He further assured them that the practice would See a repeat to enable proper conduct of justice and a good check on the number of inmates in the prison.

The Controller of Prison, Halliru Na’abba, heaped praises on the chief judge, the State government and the Federal government for having the Welfare of the inmates at heart and downsizing the number of inmates in the prison.

He told those pardoned to make good of the chance in initiating a change in lifestyle and to become worthy citizens of the Country.

A total of 28 inmates awaiting trial had been granted pardon by Abbas on February 8 according to reports by News Agency of Nigeria.
