After more than 300 nominations this year that included 215 individuals and 105 organisations, an International campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons(ICAN) has been awarded the Noble Peace Price. ICAN are a Nuclear Disarmament group founded in Vienna in 2007 on the fringes of International conference on the nuclear non-proliferarion treaty. They have been key players to the adaption of the historic Nuclear Weapon ban treaty signed by 122 countries in July. Even though none of known Nuclear World Powers ever put pen to paper.
A gold medal. Diploma, and a cheque of nine million Swedish kronor (£845,000) has been set as the prize which the organisation would receive at the ceremony in Oslo on December 10.
The Nobel committee said "has been a driving force in prevailing upon the world's nations to pledge to cooperate... in efforts to stigmatise, prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons".
